AMU Consultants was founded on a straightforward principle: a design is only as good as the checking behind it. We are a multidisciplinary civil and structural consultancy serving developers, contractors, government entities and private clients across the built environment.

Our engineers work across the full project lifecycle — feasibility and site investigation, concept and detailed design, statutory approvals, tender documentation, and supervision through to handover. Every drawing that leaves our office carries a named engineer's check.

Design quality is easy to promise and hard to evidence. Ours is evidenced by what does not happen: fewer rejected submissions, fewer site queries, fewer variation orders traced back to a drawing error.

We keep our project loads deliberately manageable so that senior engineers stay involved beyond the kick-off meeting. The engineer who sealed your drawings is the engineer who answers the phone when a question arises at the pour.

Structural design and analysis

Structural work begins with load path and ends with a detail a steel fixer can actually build. We model in ETABS, SAFE and STAAD, but the model is the beginning of the argument, not the end of it — every critical element is verified by hand calculation before it is issued.

Geotechnical and site investigation

Foundation decisions made without data are expensive decisions. Our geotechnical team plans and supervises the investigation, interprets the results, and issues recommendations a structural engineer can design against directly.

BIM and digital delivery

A federated model is worth having only if every discipline is genuinely in it. We coordinate structural, architectural and MEP models into a single environment, run clash detection on a fixed cycle, and issue drawings from the model rather than alongside it.

The practical result is fewer contradictions between the drawing set and reality — which is to say fewer site queries, fewer abortive works, and a shorter route from question to answer.

Case study

Redesigning a foundation and saving eleven weeks

A residential development had been designed on a piled foundation before ground investigation was complete. When the borehole logs arrived, competent rock sat far shallower than assumed across most of the footprint.

We re-analysed the foundation, replaced piling with pad footings over three-quarters of the site, and retained piles only where the rock head dropped away. The revised submission cleared approval without comment.

Questions we are asked before appointment

As early as the concept sketch. Structural feasibility influences column grids, floor-to-floor heights and basement depth — all decisions that are cheap to change on paper and expensive to change once the architectural scheme is fixed.

Yes. We begin with a design audit of the existing package to establish what can be relied on and what needs re-verification. You receive a written position on the inherited design before we commit to continuing it.

It depends on scale and complexity, but a mid-rise residential building typically runs six to ten weeks from confirmed architectural drawings and ground investigation results to an issued-for-approval package. We give a programme with the fee proposal, not after appointment.

We prepare the submission package, lodge it, respond to reviewer comments and track it through to permit issue. You are copied on correspondence throughout rather than told the outcome at the end.

Yes — design and supervision are separately scoped and separately priced, so you can appoint us for either or both. Many clients appoint us for design and a reduced periodic inspection scope rather than full-time resident engineering.

Architectural drawings or a sketch layout, the plot area and location, the intended use, and any ground investigation already carried out. If none of that exists yet, a conversation about the intent is enough to start.
